About hula hooping

Hula hooping is one of the most recognizable forms of flow arts. The hoop can move around the body or be controlled through hand-based tricks.

Waist hooping is often the first movement beginners learn, but hooping can also include hand spins, isolations, rolls, tosses, balances, and dance transitions.

On-body and off-body hooping

On-body hooping involves keeping the hoop rotating around areas such as the waist, chest, shoulders, legs, or arms.

Off-body hooping involves controlling the hoop with the hands. These movements include spins, folds, isolations, escalators, and tosses.

Getting started

Beginners often find larger and slightly heavier hoops easier to control because they rotate more slowly. As control improves, performers may choose smaller or lighter hoops for faster tricks.
