Flow Fans

Flow fans combine controlled hand movements with dance to create shapes, frames, and visual patterns.

What are flow fans?

Flow fans are handheld props used to create symmetrical shapes, sweeping movements, and dance-based sequences.

The performer usually holds one fan in each hand. By rotating the wrists and changing the position of the arms, the fans can frame the body or form patterns in the space around it.

Fan movement

Flow fan techniques include wrist rotations, weaves, flowers, folds, anti spins, extensions, and direction changes. These techniques are often combined with turns, steps, and poses, and sometimes choreographed/coupled with other artists.

Practising with two fans also develops coordination between the left and right hands.

Different fan styles

Flow fans can be made from lightweight practice materials, fabric, metal, or decorative materials. Some are designed for dance and daytime performance, while others use LEDs for performances in darker environments.
